This hand crafted table was made from my brother-in law Nick Metcalf! He spent weeks and weeks on this beauty. By combinging all different woods and stains he made a masterpeice that is almost too great to eat on. He gets his inspiration from high end retailers and then creates them by adding his unique design sense all on his own. Although he and my sister reside in Las Vegas, this table made its way all the way to Minnesota where it now resides in MY dining room! I designed these onsie's for a friend that had a baby girl! My mom constructed them for me and helped in the design process. Here I cut flowers out of felt and did a decorative stitch along the edges to add more detail. There is another flower on the back placed by the bottom for an all around cute spring look!

A silk ruffle and a silk rosette . . . need I say more? Absolutley perfect for the little one!

Spring to do list . . .

I must say that Jen has been a little busy beaver ever since she moved into her home. She has a new project every week! Here is her latest . . . mega chalk board!
My mom had this frame in her basment laying around and so jen painted int white and then painted a peice of tin with chalk board paint to double as a chalk board and magnet board!
She placed it in her laundry/entry way into the garage to always remind her of things to get donw. Right now it is of her garden plans for spring but I think the reason she wanted it so big was for Mitch's Honey Do List!

The Climb

Before image of their upstairs bath; it was really drab and needed some re-freshing.

Isn't this old peice of molding amazing!!!??? We found it at our favorite little antique shop in Shakopee How Quaint! It looks wonderful in her bathroom above her toilet. There use to be another cabinet there but we took it down for this gem.

The color of the walls is 'Sliced Cucumber' by benjamin moore. But now we are thinking of a new color and yep you guessed it MUSTARD!!!! what do you think?

Instead of putting the towel holder back up Jen got creative and found this old ladder at How Quaint and is using it for her bath towels! So innovative and one-of-a-kind!

Formica out Beadboard IN!

There was nasty Formica that lead from the counter tops to the backsplash. With them on a budget and hating there kitchen, they replaced just the backsplash with beadboard and the transformation was amazaing. Still wanting to replace there counter tops one day but at least this is a lot better than what they had!

Remember those old windows we got from a friend?

Jen painted it the same color as her dining set (pot of cream) and had a mirror cut to be mounted on the back. This turned into a brand new mirror that didn't cost a cent! By hanging it in her kitchen right off her entry is a great place to grab your things and take a peek in the mirror before heading out to work or play for the day. I hope this post inspires you to be creative with what you have lying in your garage/storage space and turn it into something functional for everyday use, but also very appealing and cohesive with the design of your home.

Dining Room Complete!

The fabric looks amazing next to the green/yellow paint color and complimented by the grey 100% silk we found for only $12.00/yd!!!

The custom cornice board and silk panels were hand crafted by our wonderful and talented mother! drapesbyjanice.blogspot.com What an upgrade from the white walls and vertical blinds right???

By mounting the cornice board to the ceiling and with the silk panels lightly dusting the floor created the illusion of huge ceilings and an overall finished look!

Here is the famous turquoise hutch setting the back drop to the off white dining set and West Elm light fixture.

She painted this dining room set 'Pot of Cream' by Benjamin Moore last august. Then re-covered the seats (well mom re-covered the seats) with the foliage pattern grey fabric we found at Calico Corners. It was a complete and absolute upgrade from what the dining set had looked like before. And with only money spent on paint and fabric, this project was a success and led to many many many more! Please give us some feedback on what you think. Wait til you see the rest of the house:)

Finally a look into Jen's House

Here is a look at their dining room the day they closed on the house. Right away Jen said the vertical blinds and the ceiling fan have got to go! So sure enough after I took this shot Mitch and Jen wasted no time in the renovation.

Also, the white walls were very institutional and Jen needed something more happy and bright!

Here is a look at the paint sample she decided on checking to see how the dark wood work would react to it. Suprisingly very well don't ya think???

This fabric we found at Calico Corners was the true inspiration for her new home. It is modern but yet traditional to accomadate Jen's vintage style and Mitch's swedish style. In this picture we are deciding if the new fabric panels would be alright with the carpet color.

Flea market season is almost here in Minnesota ...yeah!

Felt Frenzy!

I made these headbands out of peices of leftover felt and buttons I had lying around. To add more of interest to the felt I used my mother's sewing machine to sew the decorative stitches. These are so easy to make and were great gifts for the holidays. While working on these headbands I finally mastered the craft of threading a sewing machine many times!!!!! I am learning very very slowly from my mother but I guess slow is better that not at all.

A French Country Nautical Basement: After

After only 3 days, alot of shopping, planning, painting and stringing popcorn with cranberries this basement transformed into a cheerful environment ready for guest to enjoy!

This window I got back in july from a friend's old farm, I was waiting for the perfect client and perfect wall to display it on and I found it! The perfect siting area.

I made this Noel banner out or burlap and navy cotton. I cut the letters out of the navy and cut rectangles out of burlap. Then (with help) I sewed the letters on the burlap for a real home made country feel.

We found these ball mason jars at micheals for only $15.99!!!! They fit perfect in the window sills and the best part is the home owner's can fill the jars according to each season. Since this was for a christmas eve gather we filled them with navy ornaments. For spring they can do cork or flowers, and summer they can do sand and shells!

Here is my famous red rocking chair!!! I think I had a smile on my face the whole time I was painting this! Notice the tree with hand strung popcorn and cranberries, SO CLASSIC!

This was so much fun to plan and create and even under such time constraints I think it turned out amazing!!! I would love your comments on this project.

Projects for the Basement Re-do

This Drab Rocking chair was screaming at me to be PAINTED! With alot of browns, blues and white I decided what better than RED!

With a quart of paint, primer and poly this rocking chair went from drab to FAB!!!! Who wouldn't want a red rocking chair anyway?!

This was a chest the home owner had from her mother and did not like it anymore but souldn;t get rid of it. So I suggested panting it the same color as the wood paneling and distressing it to give it an aged feel. She loved the idea so I got out my paint, primer and poly!

With a lot of distressing this chest took on a whole other appeal.

A French Country Nautical Inspired Basement: Before

This basement was my most recent project. The room had great bones but just needed a couple cans of paint. Not shown in these photos, but the walls were a dark wood paneling and the home owners primed them and then we decided to paint them Benjamin Moore: Pot Of Cream. The money spent in this project was on Paint, a new Sectional and some accessories thats it! I hope you enjoy the after photos.

Transform to Turquoise

This hutch was purchased at a local goodwill for only $24.95! When Jen and I saw this beautiful piece we knew we had to have it and the color had to be turquoise.

After sanding and painting Jen distressed it a little bit and put on the poly for a good seal. Then for a surprise twist we added orange anthropology knobs, and the drawer pulls were existing.

There is a sneak peak into Jen and Mitch's new home. What do you think about the green wall and turquoise hitch in there dining room?

Here is a great cheap and easy way to decorate with words!!! It is just special words painted on wood and linked together with wire. You can hang it from the ceiling to make a mobile or hang it on the wall for inspiration.

New Look! This is one of our favorite fabrics from calico corners. Surprisingly we came up with our name "the mustard bird" and then we saw this fabric about a month later at our local Calico Corners. Don't you love when you find something so perfect?

This room is one of my dearest friends that she designed herself. The door mounted above her bed as a headboard is absolutely divine! And the best part is she found it in her attic! The reading nook is also very pleasant. When I walk into her room it is a breath of fresh air and no matter what I am feeling I immediately feel relaxed. She has created a true getaway and I hope when I finish my bedroom I will get that same feeling.

Bead Board Ceiling

This ceiling has been an inspiration for Jen's new house she will be moving into in one week! We are thinking of doing bead board on her ceilings instead of the ugly and original popcorn ceiling. Divine Dresser

You could have a chose between black? or red?

I went with white wainscoting . . .

After completing my night stands for our master bedroom I decided to take on the dresser. This was from my boyfriends childhood and was very juvenile with the different colored inserts. I cut a sheet of left over wainscoting for the inserts instead to give it a more sophisticated look. Along with the night stands I used crystal nobs to complete the set. I have transformed this piece and absolutely love it! I will post pictures of the whole room once I get it all put together. What do you think?

I am so excited to finally post my first restoration project! I loved every minute of this project I have already took on 3 more peices. I bought these 2 night stands at a garage sale for only $2.00 each! YES $4.00 for them both!!! Then I painted them white and a little distressing, add some crystal knobs and 2 very adorable night stands for my master. I hope this inspires you to flip some of your own furniture instead of buying new.

Here is Jen's newest creation . . . a button pillow! Yes she hand sewed them all on herself!! We were at a fabric warehouse a couple week ago and saw a huge barrel full of buttons! She then found the gray silk and we began to dig for gray button and a few turqouise ones as well to add some dimension. This will be her first pillow placed on her couch she is recovering for her new home! Stay tuned for more of our creative peices.

Random Wall

Here is a great idea for a blank wall in any space. This wall happened to be in our bathroom. All these random accessories we found in a box that were gathering dust. A fresh coat of white paint and some nails was all it took to create a focal point wall collage. Along with these random trinkets we added black and white family bath photos that are really cute and add a personal touch. Because we already had these things around the house and white paint this project cost was $0! Let us know what you think of our quick inexpensive random wall . . .

For our very first blog we decided to share with you one of our rooms we designed. All the sewing was left to our mother-you can check out more of her creations at drapesbyjanice.blogspot.com-she sewed the gorgeous black and white panels. To add an extra touch we hung a tassel at the top of the rod which compliments the black lamp shade we spray painted!!! and added trim! My favorite part is the conrast of the pink walls and green chair but is tied all together with black and white. The night stand got a makeover as well, we painted it black and added new crytal hardware. We hope you enjoy this room as much as we did creating it!
